Finally! I received an email this morning which made me sit up and cheer.
Amazon is announcing that beginning Jan 20,2025, books which are not DRM protected, will be available for downloading in Epub and PDF format.
This means anyone who purchases or already owns the book can download it as an Epub or PDF file and transfer it to devices other than Kindle readers. You may load it to multiple devices, upload it to your cloud service of choice, and read it on any reading app which uses Epub or PDF format.
This is wonderful and a marked change from Amazon’s historically proprietary strategy of controlling how readers used Amazon book purchases. Now there is no need to go through a maze of obstacles to liberate your Kindle library.
Amazon has done its part. This, however, does not mean that all books will available for this process. It’s up to each author to go into his or her dashboard and approve the process for each book individually. Many authors and publishers will still opt to DRM their books. But many others, especially self-published authors, will choose to make their work DRM free and downloadable in ePub format.
I have already done so for each of my books! My Amazon books are DRM free and yours to read whenever and in whatever device you choose.
